Roofing Tiles

If you’re undertaking a self-build project, the outside appearance of how you vision your home will contribute to your decisions on the materials you use to build it.

Choosing roof tiles are important; not only do they ensure that your entire home is kept dry with a water-tight surface, but they also contribute to the overall appearance of it.

Read on for more things to consider when choosing the right tile for your home.

Appearance

Ensuring that you choose roof tiles that fit in with the aesthetic of the wall cladding and joinery is key.

Your roof tiles should fit with the environment and surroundings of your property. Planning permission will sometimes dictate material limitations, based on the appearance of surrounding homes.

Design

The design and pitch of the roof itself are factors which can affect your choice of tiles. Some tiles are better designed for certain roof pitch angles. It’s a good idea to factor this early on in the design process and to consider using a roof material based on the designs and logistics of the property.

Material

There are a few different options to choose from when it comes to tiles which can all give your self-build project very different looks:

Clay

Clay tiles have been used for thousands of years and offer strong protection from outside weather. They have a long lifespan and come in an array of finishes and shades, from burnt orange to reds and terracotta. Clay tiles are great for properties with intricate details, and different types can be used to create patterns. Plain tiles are versatile and are best suited for dormers, conical and eyebrow roofs.

Slate

Natural slate is great for protecting your home against Nottingham’s unpredictable weather. It’s also known for its longevity, with natural slate having a lifespan of around one hundred or more years! They also give an overall authentic finish for those looking for a more traditional aesthetic.

Eternit slate is cost effective and easy to install, with all the aesthetic benefits of genuine slate.

Concrete

Much like clay and slate, concrete tiles offer high levels of durability and are both cost-effective and easy to fit. Concrete tiles are popular because they are cheap and give a clean, smooth finish.
