Taking care of all your roofing needs
Getting a new roof? There are a few things you should know to get ready for the big change. You can make the entire job go much faster and more efficiently if you follow the next few steps.
Give Parking Access
You’ll need to get your vehicles out of the way, since the contractor will need to park right up near the house. Not only does this make it easy for the contractor to get to their tools and materials, it also keeps your vehicles protected against falling roofing items.
Take Down Wall Hangings
Building a new roof is a big job and it requires plenty of hammering, as well as extra machinery. If you have any breakable items on the walls or on shelves mounted on the walls, consider taking the items down for the time being. The vibrations will shake things up and you could end up with broken decorations.
Get Your Kids Ready
Small children tend to be frightened of loud noises and there will be plenty of those. You can either vacate the house while the roof is being worked on, or you can explain to your children what the noises are. Be sure to keep them away from the house if they’re outdoors, as falling debris can be dangerous.
Prepare Your Garden
It’s a good idea to prune your garden and put drop cloths over any shrubbery near the house. You’ll also want to move any outdoor furniture or toys away from the house to avoid debris from falling on it.
Clear the Roof
If you have anything on your roof, such as lightning rods, satellite dishes, etc. you will need to take these down while the roof is being replaced. For company placed items, it’s best to call the company and ask if there are any special recommendations for removing the items. They may send someone out to uninstall and then reinstall the items after the roof Is done.
Prepare Outlets
Your contractor will need access to electricity and while outdoor outlets are probably best, you can also select some from inside the house or in the garage. Look for one that is near a window where a cord can be run and that will not impede foot traffic within the home. Your contractor can run a cable through the house, but if people are tripping over it, you’ll end up with injuries that could be avoided, so it’s best to select something closer to the outside of the home.
Let Your Neighbours Know
It’s polite to warn your neighbours that there will be construction going on next door. Let them know when it will start and how long you expect the project to go on for. They’ll appreciate the heads up.
Rebuilding your roof is a big job, but these tips can make it just a little easier on you and your family.
